Rugby is played all over the world, second only to soccer in popularity. In Northern California, Rugby is a sport growing in popularity as shown by the large number of local teams and national rankings of those teams. In the Northern California Rugby Football Union, there are 30 men's and women's teams at the Youth/ High School level, 25 at the collegiate level, and 25 teams at the Club (18 plus) level. Northern California has a nationally recognized dominance in the collegiate rugby club world, with Berkeley Men's Club winning 22 of the 27 Division I National Championships. Jesuit High School won Tier A of the National High School League in 2006, and Vacaville won Tier B. In Women's Division 1, Stanford dominated two years running, 2005-2006, with UC Santa Cruz winning D2. In the Women's club circuit, Berkeley has been the National Championships for the last 5 years. The NCAA has recognized Women's Rugby as an "Emerging Sport" at the college level, thereby paving the way for potential athletic scholarships under Title IX. Further, the USA National Women's Rugby team won a recent World Championship, and is consistently ranked in the top levels of international rugby. The 2001 "International Player of the Year" was a young female athlete from California.
